Sports Injury Recovery: Returning to Activity Safely

Returning to sport is not just a question of waiting until pain settles. The injured area needs to tolerate the speed, load and control the activity requires.

Understand the demand of your sport

Running, football, court sports and strength training stress the body in different ways. Rehabilitation should eventually reproduce the type of force, speed, balance and repetition the athlete will face after returning.

Rebuild capacity progressively

Early exercises may look simple because the priority is restoring basic movement and strength. Later stages should become increasingly specific, adding load, speed, change of direction or endurance when appropriate.

Pain is only one signal

An athlete may feel little pain but still have significant strength, balance or confidence deficits. Testing those qualities can reveal whether the body is ready for a higher level of activity.

Use graded return rather than one big test

Going directly from rehabilitation to a full competitive session creates an unnecessary jump in demand. A graded return can begin with controlled training, then partial participation and finally normal activity when tolerance is demonstrated.

Keep the prevention work

The exercises used during rehabilitation often address useful strength or control deficits. Keeping an appropriate version of that work in regular training can support long-term physical capacity.
